Founded in 1883, the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Wisconsin-Madison that conducts research in the areas of cellular regulation, molecular genetics, protein structure, hormone action, virology and developmental biology. Located in Madison, Wis., the department develops methods for the preservation of sperms for the artificial insemination industry. It also performs processes for the development of fermentation methods to prepare penicillin and other antibiotics. The Department of Biochemistry s staff is comprised of graduate students, postdoctoral investigators, technicians, faculty members and undergraduates. The department features equipment for a range of scientific works, such as mass spectrometry, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectroscopy and anisotropy. In addition, it organizes national and international seminars.
