Phone Co
116 Lincoln Ave, Manchester Center, VT 05255
Mountain Telecom, Inc. of Manchester Center, VT was incorporated in October of 1983 and began operations as an interconnect vendor doing business as Phone Company, a registered trade name. Barry Brown, the founder and owner of the company, had previously been the proprietor of Mountain Electronics, a company specializing in broadcast engineering, audio systems design and sales. In 1983, as AT&T was breaking up and new technology was emerging, Barry recognized the opportunity and chose to participate in the telecommunications revolution. The original business plan focused on the local community with the sale of equipment, service and cabling to residential customers and small businesses. Marketing was by personal contact and word of mouth. One year later, by the end of 1984, the company had sold and installed over 50 systems. Phone Company was making a name for itself in the hospitality industry which accounted for about 30% of sales. We learned that great service and great customer relations are the key to success in Southern Vermont and the surrounding area. Business continued to grow at a steady pace for the next two years with approximately 50 new systems being installed each year. In 1986 Phone Company was selected over 11 other competitors to install the telecommunications systems at the newly renovated Equinox Hotel in Manchester Village. This historic hotel is the jewel of the Vermont resort industry and was a transitional account for Phone Company. It was the company's first large scale installation and required the staff to develop new technical competence. The Equinox account also signaled the beginning of a new approach to marketing. The new approach was to establish accounts that would expand and upgrade their systems. Whereas the company had previously sold very small systems as one-shots, the sale of larger systems meant the beginning of long-term relationships. By the end of 1987, Phone Company moved to its present location in an office suite at the Lincoln Avenue Technology Complex. During the end of the eighties Phone Company faced the challenges of rapid growth. The company emerged a strong business with: a solid group of dedicated technicians, a satisfied and loyal client base, cost effective, long-term relationships with suppliers, an excellent credit rating and the steady growth of new accounts. The early nineties saw a slow easing of the economic recession in Northeast. The Phone Company benefited with increased profitability from controlled growth. New opportunities were explored in the areas of voice processing and data communication. Our staff have received training for the installation, programming and maintenance of new telecommunication systems. The techs must pass certification tests before installing new systems and system upgrades. The rapid advances in technology have created a good climate for equipment sales, as the demand for more sophisticated telecommunications hardware and software has grown. Our sales efforts target businesses and organizations which have a potential for growth. We focus on designing a system that meets the client's present needs, while allowing for an incremental expansion of the system at affordable prices in the future. We have established accounts with companies and organizations ranging from light industry to schools and professional offices to hotels, to name a few. Phone Company continues to be a customer first, service first organization. We believe that this attitude is our best competitive resource.
