Established in 1949, the U.S. General Services Administration helps to keep the nation safe by providing tools, equipment and nontactical vehicles to the U.S. military. It provides law enforcement, firefighting and rescue equipment and disaster recovery products and services to state and local governments. The department oversees a federal agency of more than 13,000 people and an annual budget of over $15 billion. The U.S. General Services Administration provides travel and transportation services to manage federal motor vehicle fleet, preserves historic buildings, manages a fine arts program, and develops, advocates and evaluates governmentwide policies. The U.S. General Services Administration delivers products, services and policies to federal customers through federal acquisition and public building services and independent office of the inspector general and civilian board of contract appeals. It also makes policies for managing the acquisition, use and disposal of aircraft that are owned and hired by federal civilian agencies.
