Arcosanti is an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona, 70 miles north of metropolitan Phoenix. Established in 1970 by the Cosanti Foundation, the town is designed according to the combined concepts of architecture and ecology developed by Italian architect Paolo Soleri. When complete, Arcosanti will house 5,000 people and demonstrate ways to improve urban conditions and lessen the impact of human inhabitation on the earth. Its large, compact structures and solar greenhouses will occupy 25 acres of a 4,060-acre land preserve, keeping the countryside in close proximity to its urban dwellers. Arcosanti also provides an educational process. A five-week program teaches building techniques and the originator s philosophy, while continuing the city's construction. Several thousand people have participated in the construction of the town s various mixed-use buildings and public spaces.
