Its such a shame that only when people have a problem they feel like writing a review. I have always had a good experiance with douglas orr and the price of real professional service was lower than the competition. I will continue to use douglas orr for all of my plumbing needs

Rip-off. I had a problem with a recirculating pump. Called Douglas Orr, told them. [I live in a building that they visit regularly. They said they would someone the next day, would cost a minimum of $98 (one hour, even if time was less, and their time includes the time to come over from the previous appointment). No-one came, and they did have the courtesy to call at the end-of-the-day to so advise (!!). But the next day, I got the call and, fifteen minutes later their plumber (David) arrived. "Do you know the building?" "Yes, he says, I know it well". Shortly after, he tells me "the re-circulating pump has a problem,, we don't repair, and we must order a new one". Thank you, I knew that. "Your pump may need special flanges, seems to have a special installation. We may have to cut the pipe.". [Not true.]. It took him 20 mns to see the pump, advise getting a new one, write out a purchase request from his 'purchasing department' marked ASAP. I went on-line - the pump precisely like mine and with the 'special flanges' (the only way it comes), is widely available under $85 on-line. The next day the 'purchasing department' called: "Your pump costs $169". Long story short, I ordered it on-line myself (total of $73.01 including shipping etc..) and will undo and re-do the four bolts holding the old pump and replace it. Thank you Douglas Orr -> I learnt nothing I hadn't told them, they came un-prepared and unknowledgeable, and they tried to rip me off a second time on the price of the pump. Who knows what they would have charged me to replace it if they had had a chance. DON'T USE THEM UNLESS YOU ARE HAPPY THROWING YOUR MONEY AWAY!

I called Douglas Orr because of a possible water leak between my condo unit & the one directly beneath. They were aware that the task was to determine the source of the leak to see IF it was my responsibility to pay for the repairs in my neighbor's condominium. Within five minutes the plumber said that he didn't see any issue in my unit. The president of the HOA & the handyman they hired also arrived at the same time. Since nothing was apparent in my condo, all three men went to the unit below so that the handyman could cut the ceiling & the plumber could make an assessment. Ten minutes later the plumber came upstairs & stated that the leak wasn't coming from my unit but a pipe seal between the two units. My immediate response was that the repairs were no longer my responsibility but of the HOA. At that point he began saying that the pipe was still part of my unit. I wasn't sure why he was acting that way until later. Anyway, he left my unit & I expected him to return with the paperwork for the service call. Nearly two hours passed & I heard work going on in the other unit. I wasn't alarmed because the handyman for the association was expected to be making the repairs, to the pipe & the ceiling. However, when the plumber didn't return I wondered if he settled the bill with the H.O.A. & left. Just to be sure, I went downstairs & asked the neighbor if the plumber was still there. I was surprised when he said yes, & I asked that he step outside. The plumber came out covered in drywall & goodness knows what else because HE had been making the repairs - WITHOUT AN ESTIMATE OR MY CONSENT. I asked if he understood that the repairs were the responsibility of the H.O.A. & he said yes, & that it was 'good for me' that I wouldn't have to pay. Yet an hour later he sauntered into my unit with the bill & saying it was company policy that I pay in full! I reiterated what he had acknowledged an hour earlier & pointed out that he hadn't come back to me with an estimate or gained my authorization. He insisted & called his office. The woman on the phone explained how it was policy that the person who makes the call pay for the charges, & that they don't interfere with condo owners & the H.O.A. I asked if I could at least submit the invoice to the HOA so it could be reviewed for reimbursement. I even said that if the HOA ultimately refused to pay, I'd be willing to take up the cost myself, but she refused. She kept repeating that they'd done nothing wrong because to call them IS to expect them to do the job. Worse still, she said that they never give their clients estimates beforehand. A service call is not equivalent to doing a high value repair IN SOMEONE ELSE'S HOME WITHOUT ANYONE'S PERMISSION. Finally, I let them run my credit card just to get the plumber out of my house. At that point he even joked that if he wanted, he could've escalated the charges to over $1,000 & I'd STILL have to pay! After he left, I spoke with the HOA president & he said that the plumber sent the association's handyman away to do the job himself. No wonder he was trying to assign blame for the leak on my unit. I called the Douglass Orr office again & asked for a refund because they had forced my hand - but to no avail. The woman then said that she would have her boss call me the next morning to sort the matter out but he didn't bother. The actions of this plumber and this company are dishonest and untenable. Update: after seeing my review on Angie's List, I was finally contacted by a Mr. Berounsky from Douglas Orr. He made no apologies for the actions of the plumber or their dishonest policy, but after a lot of back & forth offered a mere $100 refund out of $480.75. Months later, I have finally received not $100, but $90 in return, leaving me with a charge of $390.75 to which I did not, & do not, agree.

Very disappointed in Orr. Overall grade: VERY POOR. They are the only plumbers my association allows owners to use, even though they’re more expensive than the average plumber. I recently had a leak coming from the unit above, and they came several times to my unit, but the story would be the same. I would see the leak, Orr plumbing would come out, spend a couple of hours there, hand me an invoice and leave. Like the movie “Groundhog Day” the leak would come back that same night. This went on and on for over a week. Finally, the property manager, went upstairs, splashed some water around, and the found the leak 10 mins later. It was due to due to bad caulking. Such a simple problem. Why didn't they pick that up?

Stay away from Orr. If your Condo Association has a contract with them, cancel it. They’ll just treat you as a “cash cow.”
