Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in 1863 in Olpe, Germany. Drawn to the ideals of St. Francis, Mother Theresia cared for poor and neglected children and for persons in need of health care. In 1875 she sent Sisters to Indiana, where the mission grew to include hospitals, schools, orphanages and homes for the aged. Today the Sisters of St. Francis sponsor a corporate organization that includes facilities in both Indiana and Illinois and a number of support companies for these facilities. The facilities can be found in Crown Point, Michigan City, Crawfordville, Beech Grove, Indianapolis, Mooresville, Hammond, Dyer and Lafayette, Ind.; and Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields, Ill. Their main offices are in Mishawaka, Ind.
