With Martial Arts being a vital aspect of my family's culture, puissantly emphasizing that my father held it closely to his heart when he was younger, I know what true Karate is when I see it... And I can more than promise that Mr. Miyake's Karate Dojo is a true and pure form of the Japanese Martial Arts that has been long treasured and cultivated.

Before discovering Mr. Miyake's Dojo, I attended several others, which -behind the facade and the claim of being a genuine, traditional Karate class- all disappointingly ended up being a "let's see who can throw the most punches and fastest kicks without getting knocked over" competition, where the teachers couldn't even demonstrate any aspect of Karate themselves. In one instance, a teacher ordered Church's Chicken during class, while reciting the Korean Anthem before a match (ahem, may I mention that Karate is obviously Japanese).

Although I can go on forever criticizing the fraudulent Dojos that propagate its unsubstantiated credibility, ultimately, and out of all honesty, the Japanese Martial Arts Shuko-kai International has been (and still is) the only genuine Karate Dojo established in the valley. Even as a gullible and naive child, the moment the six-year-old me stepped into his dojo, I was immediately struck by the disillusionment: what I had believed was true was disenchanted by the serious and veritable atmosphere that was newly presented.

To this day, I wholeheartedly respect Mr. Miyake, and am inexplicably grateful for him; he has taught me, not only about how to defend myself, but how to become a team leader and learn to work in rapport -harmoniously with others. He has allowed me to look at Karate, not as a sport, but as a way to be able interact with my culture.
