The Alabama Bureau of Investigation Division, formerly the Investigative & Identification Division, has been in operation since 1935. It has conducted investigations for the Alabama Highway Patrol, Governor s Office, Attorney General s Office and other state departments. The division also assists the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sheriffs, circuit solicitors and municipalities upon request. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation Division operates the Automated Fingerprint Identification System s headquarters in Montgomery, Ala. Other programs include AMBER Alerts, criminal information center and hazardous devices team. The division also conducts methamphetamine investigations. Much of its work during the 1940s was conducted on behalf of the United States Military.
