Alabama Department of Mental Health
100 N Union St, Montgomery, AL 36104
The Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation is the state agency responsible for serving Alabama citizens with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and substance abuse addiction. Annually, we serve over 230,000 people through a broad network of state mental illness and intellectual disability facilities and community-based services. These services include residential, outpatient, and prevention programs with respect to substance abuse addiction. We are very proud of the fact that our state operated facilities have achieved and maintained high standards in health care provision. Currently, we operate one developmental center for persons with intellectual disabilities and seven facilities for persons with mental illness. Through community-based services the department contracts with hundreds of local service providers in all 67 counties.
