It does not have as high an R-value as closed cell foam, but it still outperforms fiberglass with ease. Open cell foam is less expensive to install, is used in interior applications only, and is superior as a sound barrier to closed cell. Closed cell foam insulation can be used in both interior and exterior applications. It is denser and more rigid than open cell because gases are trapped inside the cells of foam. It acts as a heat, moisture, and vapor barrier, and its rigid strength contributes to the structural integrity of the walls.
