The Napa County Sheriff's Office started in the 1850s just after California became a state. The county lines changed several times before settling on its current boundaries. The first sheriff was elected in 1853. Since that time, there have been 25 sheriffs, with the last three being sheriff/coroners. The Napa County Sheriff's Office has its central location in Napa, Calif., and several substations in various parts of the county. The department has more than 110 employees. Napa County is located in one of California's most beautiful valleys, with a population of nearly 120,000 spread out over approximately 800 square miles. The valley's temperate climate allows residents to take advantage of recreational activities that are available, such as golfing, fishing, riding, hiking, camping, boating and other water sports. Other attractions include the hot springs resorts, Lake Berryessa (the largest man-made lake in California) and the famous Napa Valley wineries and vineyards. Within the county limits are several incorporated cities and towns. These include American Canyon, Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga, Calif. The Napa County Sheriff's Office provides police services for American Canyon and Yountville.
