For 27 years as a clinical psychologist in NH, my background in Social Learning Theory has kept me focused on the importance of people's needs and expectations, hopes and frustrations, attitudes and behaviors. This has been very helpful in understanding folks' lives and the impasses which bring them into counseling. To understand and appreciate someone truly requires a focus on what's important for that person. Attitudes and behaviors formed earlier in life -- including in the families of origin, and earlier love relationships -- may lead to conflicts in various situations years later. As a result, important psychological needs may go unmet, resentments may build, and feelings of being "stuck" or even hopeless may increase. Nor is it all about self-understanding: Understanding the important people in our lives is just as important. Our spouses, family members, work colleagues and friends also have been shaped by their past experiences ... giving rise to the clashes and misunderstandings that so often result. When folks reach counseling, they're typically at an impasse, finding that their expectations and perceptions, and habitual behaviors, aren't serving so well anymore. It's not a matter of "right or wrong," "good or bad," but of joining with the client to view things differently, try different approaches, see what's helpful, modify old habits ... Emerge with a better self-understanding and appreciation, and more options for meeting your needs. I bring the same approach to working with couples. Of course nobody wants to be unhappy. Everyone wants to come home to a comfortable close relationship with someone who understands him or her, communicates in an open and caring way, and joins together in pursuing common goals. However, if this is what we all want, then how does it get "messed up"? That's the challenge: to understand how needs, expectations, breakdowns in communication, defensiveness, building resentments, feelings of helpless that result.
