The Tennessee Military Department works for the protection and safety of the general public. The department includes Tennessee Army National Guard and Tennessee Air National Guard. The Tennessee Military Department employs a staff of more than 2,300 full-time people. It operates Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), which responds to various emergencies and natural disasters. Tennessee Emergency Management Agency employs a staff of over 100 people in nearly 30 branches throughout western and eastern Tennessee. Tennessee Air National Guard works with the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard Bureau. Tennessee Army National Guard has approximately 10,700 soldiers and is assisted by the Tennessee State Guard as a force multiplier.
