Founded in 1941, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, earlier known as Alabama Electric Cooperative, is a nonprofit generation and transmission organization. The cooperative provides electric energy to more than 1 million customers in Alabama and Florida. It offers assistance in strategic planning and load forecasting. PowerSouth Energy Cooperative also has a generating capacity of over 1,600 megawatts. The cooperative uses natural gas, coal and water to generate energy. Its unit, Charles R. Lowman Power Plant, burns nearly 1 million tons of coal and generates approximately 550 megawatts of energy. The cooperative employs a staff of more than 500 people.
