He felt that he was too young to really retire and decided to open his own business. Since his working career was in Public Safety (he also spent time as a Police Officer in Springfield) John felt becoming a Chimney Sweep would allow him the freedom of his own business along with continuing to use his training in Public Safety. John didn't want to get involved in selling equipment so he chose to focus on service.
