***BEWARE***DO NOT HIRE THIS CONTRACTOR !!!! I recently hired this contractor to build a deck on the ground around my above ground pool, along with a small platform to get in and out of the pool from. The initial estimate was $2400. I added some decking and he said it would be approximately $3000. The decking and platform were completed but not the railings and safety gate, he said he would be finishng the following day and was expecting payment of over $5000. After shock and conversation we both realized it was poor communication and he meant the decking would be $3000, not the whole job. The requested amount still did not make sense when I figured the initial cost of the platform and the square footage price of the additional decking. He then informed me that the quote did not include stairs to reach the platform or safety railings. I agreed to pay him the requested amount, especially because I wasnt aware of how we were supposed to leap up onto the 5 foot platform without stairs and for fear of people falling off once they got up there. The following day the job was not completed however he requested payment due to having payroll obligations. The locking gate was not yet built. I reluctantly paid him the requested money with the exception of $200. He did return and finish the gate however, I noticed very rough edges on the railings and large imperfections. I pointed this out to him and he defended himself by saying there was only one grade of pressure treated wood. I showed him otherwise after simple research also learning that the grade he used was not recommended for use on railings and decking. I asked him to fix this problem as I have little children who will be using these railings daily and there would be no doubt of injury. He responded by telling me to keep the $200 and if I contacted him again he would file harrassement charges. I assure you there was never any harrassement. I am now stuck with poor worksmanship. I am now forced to hire someone else to fix this to avoid injury. So if you want not only poor craftmanship but an inability to have any accountability or responcibility for their work this is your guy. He does a poor job and then threatens me to avoid being accountable. I can only hope that I can attatch photos. If not I will gladly share them if requested.
