About Haney Farrier Service. Haney Farrier Service generally serves from Lodi to Merced and from Tracy to Sonora offering regular, corrective, therapeutic, hot, and cold shoeing as well as balanced trimming for all types of horses including ponies, miniatures, drafts, donkeys and mules. Josh Haney has been trimming horses since 2007 and shoeing since 2008. He is certified through Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School, and has served various apprenticeships. Shoeing and Trimming. I think the most important part of shoeing and trimming is balancing the foot through proper skeletal alignment by way of balanced trimming. Proper balance results in an equality of forces on bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. When the bottom of the foot is balanced it allows optimum blood circulation for health of bones and surrounding tissues. A shoe should support the hoof by forming a symmetrical base of support around the horses center of gravity. Some good information. When to shoe. The first reason is when the rate of wear is faster than the rate of growth such as when the animal is frequently used or ridden. Another reason is when a working animal has thin, week, and sensitive feet. When to trim. For an animal that isn't wearing its own feet down generally every 8 to 12 weeks. Some reasons to trim are: 1) to minimize the ability of bacteria to grow. Excess hoof wall, sole, and frog can trap outside material and cause thrush and/or white line disease. 2) When length of hoof causes excess stress on structures of the limb. 3) When cracking or splitting occurs. When to re-shoe. I recommend every 6-8 weeks. Some reasons are when hoof begins to overgrow perimeter of shoe, length of hoof causes excess stress on the structures of the limb, or shoe wears out.
