Larimer County Government
Larimer County, Colorado, is located in north central Colorado. The county encompasses 2,640-square miles of irrigated farmland, ranch lands, forests and mountains. It is the seventh largest county in the state. More than 50 percent of Larimer is publicly owned, most of which is land within Roosevelt National Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park. Major attractions and destinations in the area include the Poudre River Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado State University in Fort Collins and the Scottish Highlands Festival in Estes Park. The estimated population of Larimer County in 2004 was 283,000. Fort Collins, Loveland Berthoud, and Estes Park are among the most populated communities in the county. Elected officials include the Board of County Commissioners, County Manager, Sheriff, Treasurer and District Attorney. Larimer County is named after General William Larimer, an early settler of Denver, Colo. The Territorial legislature of Colorado named Larimer a county in 1861.
