Lexington employs over 1, 450 people ( Fulton County's largest employer ) and has a $70, 000, 000 operating budget of which 99% is funded with federal, state and private funds. People who attend our programs and our employees offer volunteer services to local hospitals, churches and other not for profit agencies each year. Lexington is not only a major employer and good neighbor, it is also an integral part of the community. Our History: Lexington began in 1953 when a small group of parents met to discuss how to improve the lives of their children who had developmental disabilities. Since then, first informally and then formally as Lexington's Board of Directors, parents have led Lexington.About a year after their first meeting this parent group established a school program for their children that eventually became part of the Gloversville School District. In 1962 they purchased the Lexington Avenue School in Gloversville, which became a sheltered workshop for young adults with developmental disabilities. In 1969 Lexington began serving adults with mental illness and physical disabilities and in 1972 opened it's first home for people with developmental disabilities. In the 1970's Lexington provided home and day program opportunities for people living in state institutions. Lexington began its Family Services Program in 1985 providing support for families caring for children and adults with disabilities who live at home.Lexington continues to expand and diversify while remaining deeply committed to its core values and mission of excellence " making Lexington a great place for people with disabilities and for our employees. Lexington has developed a full array of services and resources to help people achieve their goals in life.
