Formed in 1985, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works is divided into more than 25 divisions and groups. It employs 3,500-plus people in job classifications that include professional, technical, clerical and craft workers. It is responsible for the design, construction, operation, maintenance and repair of roads, bridges, airports, sewers and facilities that provide water supply, flood control, water quality and water conservation. The department also under takes the design and construction of capital projects and provides regulatory and ministerial programs for the county, special districts and contract cities that request services. The department s operating budget is funded by restricted revenues, such as sales taxes on gas, benefit assessments, water and sewer sales, user fees and contract revenues. Headquartered in Alhambra, Calif., the department has more than 75 field facilities in locations throughout Los Angeles County, Calif., including Palmdale, Calif.
