Mascaro concrete (Randy) put in a beautiful stamped concrete side walk and a concrete pad for our driveway. The driveway is holding up excellent, but the stamp concrete has developed a large amount of surface flaking away large patches near and around the sawn seams. We applied the surface coating that Randy recommended. This was different than the one he had to use initially because he indicated that he is no longer able to use a surface sealer with VOC's in New York. So we purchased the high-end sealer and applied it according to manufacturer’s instructions. After one year, the surface began flaking in several areas. We wondered if might be the result of having two different types sealers on, (one water based, and the other solvent based), so we used xylene to strip/remove the sealers (because it is recommended for concrete) and allowed the surface to completely dry. The next day we applied a fresh coat of the recommended sealer Randy suggested we use. It continued to flake, and an in many different areas. Randy (owner) came out in May of 2014 to look at the stamped concrete. He said he has never seen anything like this happened. I told him what we did and loved his work, but we’re very surprised it didn’t hold up. We suggested that we were interested in having it repaired or replaced. We even told him we would be willing to work with him on this because it is several years old, and were hoping to get it replaced for the summer. Mascaro never called back. We called eight times and no answer. When I called from work phone he answered on the 2nd ring, but then told me someone would get back to me. I have pleaded kindly that they return my call hoping to speak with Randy again about options. No answer or return of my calls. We are incredibly disappointed because he seemed very professional and came recommended. Up until this point we would have recommended Mascaro. However, the lack of any communication and follow-up has us very disappointed. We really liked the outfit. A friend of ours that is an Iron Worker and works with concrete daily indicated that the concrete appears to be the incorrect psi (for foundations rather than sidewalks) and that Mascaro may have accidently been delivered or poured the incorrect grade of concrete. He can take a small screw driver and keep flaking away layers of the concrete, which he indicated means it is the incorrect grade. Anyway, we plan to avoid using Mascaro’s and are advising all of our friends to do the same.
