Walt Senkow, a maker for nearly 60 years, made the vast majority of his instruments in Dallas. He studied the effects of linseed oil used in the curing of wood and believed placing his violins in the hot Texas sun with this oil improved the sound. He was a maverick in that he often designed his own patterns and he studied what makes a violin have a great sound. He experimented with making his oil varnishes, sometimes even adding egg yoke. On weekends, if Mr. Senkow was not found in his backyard workshop carving out a violin plate, he was reading materials on how the old Italian makers made their instruments. He truly loved making violins and they were the love of his life behind only his family.
