We hired Southern Building Co....

We hired Southern Building Co. to remodel our kitchen in February 2011. The job entailed removing all flooring in the kitchen and living room. Removing all kitchen cabinets and appliances. Adding additional floor space to the kitchen. Installing new cabinets, new appliances, new plumbing and electric and flooring. Job was contracted in mid February and we were given a three and a half week job completion estimate. Job is currently unsatisfactorily incomplete as of today June 1st, 2011.

Southern Building Co. used several different companies and sub contractors to work on the job.

From mid February until end of May 2011, Southern Building Co. had a sign staked in our yard advertising their business and GC License #CGC1510844

About two weeks into the job, an inspector for the City of Orlando saw the sign in the yard and the trucks in the driveway and came in to check on the job. It turned out that Southern Building Co. had not pulled any of necessary permits to do the job and the delays started from that second onward.

The cabinets that their carpenter, Brad, built for the kitchen, had to be trimmed and adjusted at least 5 times to fit appliances because they were built wrong and measured incorrectly. To this day, you can see the shelving behind the cabinet doors as well as the contents within the cabinets, because there are 5/8" gaps on the sides of the cabinet doors because they were built wrong.

The kitchen ceiling which was raised as part of the job has been painted four times already, due to nail holes popping through the drywall. It is still not right.

The extension of the kitchen floor out into the back patio was laid with cement and not leveled correctly. To this day the kitchen floor slopes down 1" over a 10 foot section. This was pointed out to the contractors several times, it was never repaired.

The sliding glass door was installed backwards on the back patio.

Several of the skylights placed in the ceiling were not tape correctly and pink colors shined into the kitchen from a reflection of the attic insulation.

Countless times work was scheduled to be done over the last four months and there were no phone calls made and no one showed up.

When the super on the job asked for part of the payment. I called to see if he had paid for the supplies on the job. The supply house said that he had not, meaning that the supply house could have placed a lien on our home for the supplies that the super was asking payment for. I offered the super the labor fee for the job and not the money for the supplies since the supplies had not been paid for yet. The super threatened to leave the job and walk.

The contractors would show up poorly dressed, unannounced, unprepared and talk on their cell phones the entire time.

Our personal tools went missing from our garage.

Several electrical boxes and wiring in the attic were left exposed without covers with wires sticking out of them.

The electrical work did not pass inspection and had to be repaired.

We chose Southern Building Co. because they were the least expensive bid. The job is still not 100% done, the kitchen cabinets are permanently built wrong, it has been over 3 months past the original date of completion. This company does not care about their customers and they do not know what they are doing, period. They are rip off artists from start to finish who use contractors that are not skilled and do not know how to show up on time or do things in a professional manner.
