Other than Chicago's steamed dogs, there is no better dog than Top Dog in Berkeley. You have to visit the Durant store, though, as this is closest to the Berkeley campus and stays open until really late. Their grill is the blackest, smokiest, and may never see the light of day again, but this is why their dogs are crisped just right, and the sesame buns are warmed just to perfection. My husband and I have been going here for 40 years (yep, 40), and it was the only thing that could satisfy our late night cravings while cramming for exams. The Bocks are great, the Germans just salty enough, and the Hots are well, really hot Top Dog also sells all the new fangled ones like Chicken Apple but if you are a purist, go for the Top Dog.
