The Topeka Police Department is a state-accredited, full-service law enforcement agency that preserves peace and order, as well as detects and prevents crime. It is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The department undertakes various criminal cases and works with other state, local and federal agencies to ensure public safety. The Topeka Police Department employs a staff of more than 295 full-time sworn officers, civilians and community volunteers. It has a K-9 division that performs duties related to building and vehicle searches, tracking criminals and crowd control. The Topeka Police Department also maintains a victim service unit that provides services to survivors, witnesses and families of the victims of death, serious injury, violent crime and natural disaster.
