Van Sciver Photography
In 1969 at the age of 16 I began my hands-on interest in photography. Growing up I had watched my father for years while sitting next to him as he worked in his darkroom developing black and white photographs taken with his Roliflex and his Speed Graphic cameras.
Then 6 he bought me my first real camera, a Mamiya Sekor 35mm. With this camera I began taking pictures of everything. Later that year I began taking photographs for the high school I went to in New Jersey. My photos for the school were used in brochures of the school's work release program with shots of students who got out of school early to go to their jobs while they earned school credit.
Three years later I bought a Hasselblad 500CM 2 1/4 square format camera brand new for $800.00 and got a job with a local photography studio where I assisted the photographer and owner with weddings. This man was a master. He taught photography school at one of the better known photography schools and I learned how to shoot with out using a light meter and using electronic flash out doors for fill-in and I learned some magnificent artistic poses.
Now at the age of 55, after raising two generations of kids which I photographed endlessly, I still enjoy this creative, artistic and very satisfying way of expressing one's self. Only now, I have moved from film to digital and from dark rooms to computer screen.
