SafeHaven of Tarrant County is a nonprofit organization that exists to end family violence through safety, support, prevention and social change. SafeHaven formed in 2006 through a merger of Women s Haven and The Women s Shelter. SafeHaven s two emergency shelters, one in Arlington and one in Fort Worth, accommodate a combined 174 women and children, making SHTC one of the largest shelters in Texas. In addition to protecting victims and creating multiple opportunities to achieve independence and self-sufficiency, SHTC also focuses on prevention by educating approximately 60,000 individuals annually. The majority of these are students who learn warning signs of abusive relationships, healthy signs of productive relationships and how to locate local resources. A leader in the domestic violence field, SHTC operates specialized programs such as: SafeLiving, a transitional living program that successfully moves families from shelter to community independence; SafeResponse, a 24/7 crisis intervention program available to hospitals and law enforcement CampHeart, a weekend camping program for child victims; SafePlay, a sports camp program for child victims; and SafeCommunities, a social change program facilitating a specific community s development of their own plan to end domestic violence.
