Steve VAN gelder sez. . . In 2002 I began painting with acrylics on rough board and continued to work with wood and mixed media. Or to BE precise. With hardware. AS a computer illustrator. Painting on plywood with scratchy acrylics was a good therapy. I like the presence of the rough board. I like the edges of the board framing the piece. The grain of the wood is a great resource for keeping it FRESH. MY finished paintings are slim rectangles floating the wall. It was a small step to start building boxy sculptures and then CUT shapes in layered wood. I learned that straight lines in wood make better furniture than ART. Round shapes. Organic and soft forms give warmth and energy to wood. The popular single cell guitar. Became a modest experience in manufacturing AS I was building versions from a template and learned about producing versions of the same idea. L like the concept of numbered and limited versions in the tradition of print making. But unlike print making. Each version is an ongoing EXPLORARATION of that FORM. WOULDSTOCK guitars are hand made. Carved and assembled. Each is branded and numbered.
