Founded in 1956, The Zen Studies Society Inc. is a nonprofit religious organization that provides various related services. Located in Livingston Manor, N.Y., the firm was founded to assist the Buddhist scholar D.T. Suzuki in his efforts to introduce Zen to the West. The Zen Weekend program offers an opportunity to acquaint Rinzai Zen Buddhist practice in a monastic environment. The workshops conducted here, emphasize the basics, such as ZAZEN (sitting posture and breathing), chanting, formal procedures for meals, and work practice. The Open Space Program offers the firm s guesthouse for weekend retreats.
