Founded in 1992, Johnson County Fire District 1 offers fire suppression and prevention services over an area of more than 90 square miles that includes over 14,000 residents. The department operates fire stations with a fleet of fire engines, trucks, tankers and rescue units and a paramedic ambulance. It responds to natural and human-caused disasters and offers rescue services. Johnson County Fire District 1 provides fire safety education programs for children and adults. It offers training services related to kitchen and candle, flood, playground, cooking and fireworks safety, electrical hazards, and the handling of portable fire alarms and smoke detectors. The department issues burn permits.
