450 Lakeville Rd, New Hyde Park, NY 11042
Kit Cheng, MD, is a medical oncologist at the Monter Cancer Center, where she specializes in treating breast cancer and cervical, endometrial, ovarian, uterine and vaginal cancers. She creates personalized treatment plans consisting of chemotherapy and other medications based on the results of pathology and genomic testing of tumors. “My job is to empower patients with knowledge about their condition so they can move forward with their care,” she says.
As a principal investigator and sub-principal investigator in multiple breast and gynecologic cancer clinical trials, Dr. Cheng is actively involved in research that aims to improve patient outcomes. Her interests include developing better treatments for HER-2 positive and ER-positive breast cancer; and reducing chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy.
Dr. Cheng started in pharmacy school. “During my training, I found I really enjoyed counseling and interacting with patients, so I decided to go to medical school.” She earned her medical degree at The State University of New York at Buffalo and completed an internal medicine residency and a medical oncology and hematology fellowship at North Shore University Hospital.
At Northwell Health, she works with a team of doctors, including pathologists, radiologists, surgical oncologists, and radiation oncologists to ensure her patients receive the best care possible. “Ongoing, open communication among our subspecialists supports our multidisciplinary approach to treatment,” she says.
Dr. Cheng is part of the Katz Institute for Women’s Health to promote women’s health across the system. She is committed to the recruitment and education of future generations of oncologists, as program director of the medical oncology and hematology fellowship for the Northwell Health Cancer Institute and assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, and is fluent in both Cantonese and English.
Helping patients throughout the course of their treatment is the most fulfilling part of Dr. Cheng’s work. “Seeing good patient outcomes is extremely rewarding,” she says. “But so is helping people who have more challenging journeys. I’m always working to support them and to improve their care.”
