Lucille Lee, MD, joined Northwell Health in 2008 as a radiation oncologist, as well as vice chair for standards and directives for the health system. She’s also an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. She became interested in radiation oncology as a specialty while attending Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; she was drawn in by the way radiation oncology brings together meaningful patient care and interactions with scientific disciplines like physics and anatomy. With that in mind, she did a residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center, and then became board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology. In her role at Northwell, Dr. Lee appreciates the environment of collaboration and teamwork that helps advance research and patient care. She feels that the way her team—from administrative assistants to nurses—works together to create a solid, patient-centric department that provides ample support for people who are going through treatment that’s often difficult and stressful. Patients can expect a combination of deep expertise, scientific background, and a compassionate approach that focuses on personalized care. Dr. Lee is also involved in several research efforts, and is principal investigator for a clinical trial looking at early-stage breast cancer patients and their potential outcome with standard radiation therapy versus no radiation. She’s hopeful that the result will lead to more tailored treatment that meets the needs of each patient. In the past decade, Dr. Lee has been recognized numerous times for her work. She’s been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Castle Connolly Exceptional Woman in Medicine multiple times, as well as a Newsday Top Doctors on Long Island recipient every year since 2012. In terms of what her patients have taught her, Dr. Lee is always impressed by the depth of their resilience. “They’ve shown me how strong people can be when they face adversity,” she says. “Just seeing that for myself, over and over, has really taught me that even when people think they can’t be courageous or brave, they really can. I try to communicate to my patients that they have that within themselves.”
