The East Jefferson Levee District was created in 1979 by an action of the Louisiana State Legislature. It maintains and operates the flood protection levee system around the East Bank portion of Jefferson Parish to protect the citizens of East Jefferson from tidal flooding of Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. It consists of administration, maintenance and police departments and has a staff of more than 50 employees. The district also has a reserve police unit that includes 25 post-certified officers. Its police department is responsible for maintaining the security of the East Jefferson Levee District property and flood control facilities; maintaining and performing pedestrian and traffic control of levees; and maintaining and performing levee inspections. The East Jefferson Levee District is located in Harahan, La.
