After China Marble & Tile came in with a Caesarstone countertop estimate that was much lower than other vendors, I chose them to work with for my project. In good faith I gave them a check for a 50% deposit (more than $3,100) in March, which they promptly cashed.
In June my architect contacted the company to schedule measuring for the counters, and the appointment was set up for the next day. Because of a scheduling issue our contractor asked that we reschedule, so the architect contacted China Marble to tell them we couldn't meet as planned and would reschedule. The next day the China Marble employee showed up anyway and there was no one available to work with him, so he left without measuring.
A new appointment was agreed to by all parties for 9am on a Friday morning. I, the architect and the contractor showed up before 9:00 and waited. My architect started trying to reach the employee on his cell when it was obvious he was late, but he didn't answer. Then my architect reached her contact at China Marble by phone and was told, "I don't know where that guy is." After waiting more than an hour I became concerned that this was not a reliable company. My architect called them back and told them we were pulling the job from them and wanted a refund of our deposit. The China Marble employee showed up after noon, more than 3 hours late and 2 hours after we told the company we were pulling the job from them. He called the architect to say he was there and she told him the job was canceled, that he should leave. He left without measuring.
For weeks now, Jason Wu at China Marble has been giving me the runaround and arguing with me about whether I could get my money back. After a lot of prodding, he agreed to call me back with word from the company's owner on the status of my refund, but he didn't call on the day he promised he would. It was left up to me to hunt him down. This happened more than once. I asked him if I could speak with the owner myself to resolve the issue and he said no, that the owner didn't speak English. After digging around, I discovered that Jason is, in fact, the owner of the company!
After repeatedly contacting him to resolve this he finally texted my cell phone last Saturday, saying that we should meet at his friend's bar on the LES at 11:00 that night to "talk it out." Numerous strange interactions like this, plus the fact that neither the phone number nor the email address on their web site function have led me to conclude this company and the owner are extremely suspicious. Checking online reviews of the company yields horror story after horror story.
Jason continues to stall and delay, week after week, with every communication. He changes his story, moves the goalpost for resolving this, doesn't reply when he says he will, even threatens legal action, which is clearly ridiculous.
No work of any kind was ever done by China Marble & Tile on my project: no measuring, no ordering of materials, no templating, no fabrication, no installation. Therefore I'm legally entitled to a full refund of my deposit. The actions by Jason Wu at China Marble & Tile to date have been not just unprofessional, but fraudulent. I'll pursue them as such.
