Established in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is one of the oldest institutions in New York City. The educational institution offers bachelor's degree and certificate programs in a range of subjects that includes architecture, fine arts and engineering. Its fine arts curriculum includes drawing, painting, sculpting, photography and graphic design. Its engineering program specializes in chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. It also has a library that contains a collection of more than 9,000 books and over 300 periodicals. In addition, the institute provides art education opportunities to New York City area students in grades nine through 12. It offers classes on portfolio preparation, writing and contemporary art issues.
