“I love being a doctor. I initially chose to study internal medicine because it encompasses the whole person and enables me to address anything that comes through my door. When I went on to subspecialize I chose gastroenterology, a procedural subspecialty, as I enjoy both thinking and doing. In addition I’ve found that even a small abnormality in the digestive system can wreak havoc on quality of life; helping people in these circumstances is wholly satisfying. Like all of medicine, gastroenterology cannot be practiced in a vacuum; it requires a thorough knowledge of the whole person. Training for any medical subspecialty like gastroenterology or cardiology requires completion of an internal medicine residency and I’ve remained committed to practicing both general medicine and gastroenterology for over 20 years. “My philosophy of care is to really look at the whole person, their lifestyle, habits, likes and dislikes, home life, work life and any other attributes that may give me a clue as to who I’m meeting with and what I can do to help. With 4 years of medical school, 6 years of postgraduate training, and over 20 years in practice, I am confident I can help almost anyone in need. Understanding that there is no substitute for time in getting to know people, I take as much time as is needed to be sure that all concerns are covered in detail. “As a physician, my goal is to provide an environment where people feel comfortable and safe discussing anything that comes to mind, where no problem is considered trivial and there is no risk of feeling judged. I enjoy teaching patients as if they were students of their disease or condition, thereby creating options that will be effective. This enables me to better partner with them on health related issues. Ultimately, I hope to provide my patients with something they cannot find elsewhere”.
