Dr. Phoebus James Dhrymes, MD

A native of New York, Dr. Dhrymes trained at NYU in Addiction Psychiatry. He trained at St. Vincent's Hospital in General Psychiatry. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Brooklyn. He received his Bachelor's Degree cum laude from Columbia University, where he also completed the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program. He is Board Certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
In addition to treating patients in private practice, Dr. Dhrymes is the Director of the Dual-Diagnosis Unit at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Manhattan. Dual-Diagnosis is a term used to describe the co-occurrence of addiction with other types of psychiatric illness. In his work treating veterans of the Armed Forces, Dr. Dhrymes has experience treating complex symptomatology such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, major addictive illness, and traumatic brain injury, frequently in the context of chronic pain syndromes.
During the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Dhrymes has continued to treat patients for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and addiction, in the hospital setting including patients suffering concurrently with COVID-19 on medical wards. Dr. Dhrymes is also an Attending Psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital Center's Psychiatric ER (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program) and has continued to treat patients there for psychiatric emergencies during the COVID crisis.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Dr. Dhrymes served as interim director of the Opioid Replacement Treatment Program. He also provided coverage for psychiatric consultations in the general hospital for patients experiencing acute psychiatric issues on intensive care units, and in other surgical and medical settings.
Dedicated to teaching, Dr. Dhrymes is on the faculty of NYU School of Medicine. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, and was awarded teacher of the year by the NYU Addiction Fellowship Training Program in 2014.
