New York Public Interest Research Group, also known as NYPIRG is one of the largest student-directed consumer, environmental and government reform organizations in New York. Founded in 1973, it is a research and advocacy organization primarily focusing on environmental preservation, consumer protection and public health issues. The nonpartisan, nonprofit group trains students and other individuals to be advocates. NYPIRG's staff produces studies on a wide range of topics, coordinates state campaigns, lobbies public officials and works with students. Its outreach program travels to communities throughout the state to inform and educate local residents on environmental issues. The organization is headquartered in New York City and has more than 20 offices throughout New York.
