Founded in 1919, Safe Space works with the New York City s most at-risk youths and families to prevent foster care placement, build strong families and promote self-sufficiency. The center serves more than 20,000 youths and their families throughout Queens and Manhattan using an integrated system of innovative programs in three core areas that include children and family, young adult and community health services. Safe Space s children and family services division prevents unnecessary foster care placement by building on each family s strengths and addressing challenges, such as poverty, substance abuse, domestic violence and mental health concerns. Its community health programming also includes extensive HIV/AIDS servicesthrough its comprehensive advocacy resources and empowerment program that offers critical support and case management for HIV+ men and women.
