The Office of the Secretary of State, previously known as the Keeper of Records, operates under the government of the New York State Department of State. Established in 1778, it is one of the oldest offices in the administration of the state government. The New York State Department of State manages various codes, administrative rules, coastal resources, cemeteries and local government divisions. It operates the state s licensing and fire prevention and control offices.
