Established in 1817, The New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, nonprofit and membership-based organization. It organizes scientific conferences and symposia, and brings together scientists from throughout the world. Located in New York City, the academy hosts conferences on the most pressing current scientific issues and discusses the topics of the discussion groups. It also initiates the Harbor Project, a consortium of 40 groups dedicated to developing pollution prevention strategies for the New York-New Jersey harbor. The academy publishes the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, which collect proceedings of important scientific conferences. It organizes several programs, including the science alliance, New York science and engineering fair and science research training programs.
