The Junior Lifeguard Program, based in Newport Beach, Calif., is one of the programs of the fire department of the city government. The program enrolls more than 700 participants every year. It provides trainings in water safety practices and rescue techniques to more than 20,000 city residents. Established in 1983, the program serves as a source of identifying future lifeguards. It is a self-funded program that provides a range of fire safety trainings to people. The fire department provides an interactive CD that covers several areas, including fire safety, beach safety and disaster preparedness. The department also provides a variety of information on fire prevention practices.
