Passport Systems, Inc was founded in December 2002 to develop and commercialize nuclear resonance fluorescence ( NRF ), a technology invented by MIT Professor and Passport founder William Bertozzi, as well as other technologies, to address the threats facing the world after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Passport Systems' technologies are applied to automatically identify sea, air and land cargo contents in a fraction of the time required by other systems. The company has completed the preliminary design for a full-scale NRF scanner with more than $20 million in government and private funding. While most containers entering the U.S. at ports, airports and border crossings are passively scanned to detect shielded nuclear or radiological material, fewer than five percent are actively scanned. Increased national security concerns also require better and more comprehensive scanning at national borders for explosives, nuclear materials and weapons of mass destruction. New and more complex trade and tariff regulations also are creating a growing demand for fast, reliable verification and certification of the commercial contents of cargo. While existing scanning systems offer excellent high-resolution images, Passport's technologies can also provide capabilities ranging from a fast and highly accurate detection of fissile nuclear materials to the elemental composition of the contents of a container. This ability to identify the lethality of materials that appear harmless is an important new development in the evolution of scanning detection systems. The ability to identify contents also offers customs authorities a valuable tool in detecting contraband ( drugs, currency, counterfeit pharmaceuticals, etc. ) and mislabeled shipping manifests designed to avoid paying higher tariffs. Passport's technologies allow the user to answer the age-old critical question faced by all inspection authorities: What's in the box?
