My child is attending Sylvan - the program is great. I can see the difference in her school test scores and her comfort level with her school work has increased. She also enjoys going, which is half the battle with outside tutoring.

I have just read an ad at craig's list on line looking to hire teachers for the Sylvan center in Nutley NJ, and I have to say that I was pretty shocked to learn that they acctually are offering $13 per hour for the instructors. They also require that the person needs to be a certified teacher. I had an appointment there over the summer, I was charged $50 for the appointment to be told that it cost between $42-$50 per hour for instruction. Meanwhile, the teachers are getting nothing out of it, I'm not a teacher, but obviously, I'm still outraged that they would have the nerve to make such a small offer to professionals like them. It's discouraging and downgrading to these professionals, it's nothing but pure and simple exploitation. Luckly, I'm blessed enough that I can afford their fees, however, I would rather pay this money for a private tutor in my home or for a nice educational software at Staples ( which I just did ! Price: $40 bucks! )and my child loves it. By the way, the ad was posted on craigslist.org on September 10, 2007. The teenager that helped me at Staples informed me that she earns more!
