We moved to the KC area last year for work and found a rental through Rental Home KC. We both reviewed the lease and specifically asked the rental agent to confirm that we were able to terminate early should our employer require us to relocate again (obviously with loss of deposit, etc). Based on our understanding of clauses in the lease and reassurance from the rental agent, we signed.



About six months later we needed to relocate again and contacted the rental agency. A different representative pointed to one statement in the lease that would require us to pay through the end of the lease unless a new renter could be placed in the property. She even aknowleged that people get confused about that particular clause all the time!!



The property was immediately listed but never rented, we even offered to pay a portion of the rent if somebody moved in! I know of one applicant that was rejected because of pets (which we also had in the property), but I couldn't get any answers or updates during the final months of our lease.



We realize it is the renter's responsibility to understand the lease before signing, but it is totally unacceptable for the agent to have misled us about the ability to terminate the lease early. This cost us almost $15,000 in duplcate rent and utilities. We couldn't even get our deposit returned early!!
