It was a 25-seat luncheonette in Waycross, Ga., called The Green Frog and promised “Service with a Hop”. He went on to open the first Olive Garden in Orlando, Florida in 1982. Olive Garden continues to be the number one full-service Italian restaurant company in the country with more than 800 restaurants bringing Italian hospitality to hungry people around the world.

Happy Birthday, not so much...

A friend asked me where I wanted to go for my birthday and I said the Olive Garden. We usually enjoy eating at the Olive Garden, but this last visit was a BIG miss. It started with my appetizer. Someone had dumped a lot of garlic in the stuffed mushrooms and the calamari was rubbery. The batter fell right off the strips. My white wine cream sauce was greasy with puddles of butter separating from the rest of the sauce. Isn't cream sauce culinary school 101? The shrimp was under cooked and slimy for my taste and was drowned by sauce. It was inedible. To their credit, they took the dish back and asked me what I wanted instead. I really would have rather quit while I was behind and my stomach queezy. I ordered the ravioli and it came with the very minimum of marinara and melted Italian cheses. It was dry and largely tasteless. This last experience was not a happy one, not a Happy Birthday for me. I ran into someone outside the restaurant who asked me about the food. I said you will get a much more edible meal at "99" just down the road. At least I saved them.

Excellent food for the money. Very consistent. Not for younger kids.

Quick, Inexpensive, and Filling

This restaurants stays packed-year round! If you are prepared to wait about an hour, then you are in for a treat. I know its not "real" italian food, but I don't have $2500 bucks and air delays to fly to Italy. It's cheaper (ever cheaper if you own a hybrid) to make it to this family restaurant. It's decent, and so is the bill.
