I recently received a check from my uncle as a graduation gift and wanted to deposit it into my savings account. I deposited it in the drive up ATM after hours on June 1st at the Orem, Utah Branch and was alerted that it would be approximately a week until my funds were available. I waited two weeks and still saw no sign of my money put into my account so I visited the branch. According to the banker I spoke to, they were unable to contact the maker of the check. When they gave me the phone number they had been trying I told them that it was the incorrect number and gave the right one, but they would not call the correct number. Instead, they continued trying the wrong number, and this lasted for another two weeks. I asked my uncle, the maker of the check, to visit the branch personally to sort out any issues and to verify his identity, but neither banker that I had worked with was there at the time so he left a copy of his I.D. and his *CORRECT* phone number to contact him. Still, no one called him. Fraud was suspected and my savings account was shut down, my card was cancelled, and I had no access to *ANY* of my money. Not just the check that I had tried to deposit, but also my previous funds. So I had no way of eating or paying my bills until I was given a temporary ATM card a few days later. At this point it had been a month since I deposited the check and I was becoming incredibly impatient. One of the bankers I was working with suggested that I ask my uncle to cancel the check and instead give me a money order, but upon contacting his bank he realized the money had been withdrawn from his account on June 2nd. (A month ago). I threatened to bring my attorney into this scenario if things weren't resolved, and that's when it finally seemed like anyone began *TRYING* to help me. Finally my uncle was contacted by my banker and someone from the fraud department, his identity was verified, and my check was supposedly ready to go. I was told that I would have the money deposited into my account in the next 48 hours. I waited three days, still no funds showed up. I visited the Orem Branch yet again, possibly for the tenth time in the last month and a half, to see where my money had gone. They told me at most it would be another 48 hours. I waited four days and *STILL* nothing to show for anyone's efforts. Finally, two days ago, I saw the money deposited into my checking account. It's nice to know that it takes Chase Bank nearly a month and a half to deposit a check. I have been utterly patient, kind, and understanding while waiting for *MY* money to be given to me. What angers me the most is that for whatever reason, Chase thought it would be a good idea to withdraw the money from my uncle's account but refuse to give it to me, merely to "prevent fraud." Well, that's fraud. He didn't write the check for Chase, but it was still taken and held onto for much longer than necessary.
