Unethical, Unorganized, and doesn't follow through on agreements

I don't know if this was a fluke or just the case of a contractor who thought he had an out-of-state owner who wouldn't check on his actions, but my experience with Harman Handyman certainly didn't fit the reviews.

I contacted Scott on 9/10 to get a quote for multiple small jobs on a property my son purchased. I sent a copy of the pages from the home inspection for the work to be done (carpet stretching, grout/caulk work in bathtub/shower, window screen repair/replacement), identified the timeline, gave additional details, and offered the opportunity to inspect the site to view the work to be done. After waiting a week and getting multiple apologies for delays, the quote finally came on 9/17. I scheduled the date for the work (9/24), confirmed the time (on site arrival 0800-0900), and thought all was good. Boy, was I wrong!!!

Since we were still driving cross-country, we had a family member on-site at 0730 to ensure access to the property. At 0930 she called to say nobody had arrived yet. When I called to check on the status of the arrival, I was informed someone would be there shortly, but they were at another job. At 1230 I was called by the family member and told one young guy was there and had done two strips of caulk in two places in two hours of time, and the guy had said the "other guys" would be coming later from other jobs. At this point I call the office to find out what's going on and leave a voicemail.

A short while later, I get a call from someone who didn't identify himself, so I'm assuming it's the young guy at the site. He tells me that the other guys are not going to be there that day due to other jobs. I proceed to question the competency of this company, charging me master tech prices while sending me apprentices to do the job. When the other line identifies himself as the owner (Scott), I go through the timeline of the quote and scheduling with him. He admits he did not fully review the work request during the quote process and did not realize the level of work to be done. He further goes on to say he couldn't get the work done until later in the week. When I tell him this is unacceptable, he announces he is pulling out of the job, cold cut. He proceeds to call his young guy on the site and tell him to leave immediately. Turns out the young guy is Scott's son, who admitted to my family member that he was not qualified to do the work that he was sent in to do. This explains the two strips of caulk in two hours.

As we are left scrambling to find someone to get the carpet stretched so we could unload the Uhaul upon on 9/26, we learn from the new handyman that Scott is already telling stories about us and our job, attempting to poison the well in the Provo handyman community. When I gave the rest of the story to the new guy, the tone of our conversation changed and he is now working the window screen job, as well as having taken care of our carpet issue. As for the grout/caulk job, we handled that ourselves.

The actions of Scott as outlined above indicate a lack of ethics, competency, and organizational skills. He may do good work as an individual, but his failure to follow through on agreements and to perform a complete quote, failure to meet the stated schedule, sending unqualified apprentices to work the site, quitting the day of the job, and then telling lies to the Provo handyman community have ensured a constant and continuous black mark from me for any recommendation.
