The Maine State Police, established in 1925, is the state's largest police agency with an authorized full-time staff of more than 340 sworn personnel. It maintains various specialized units, such as tactical, underwater recovery, crisis negotiation and incident management. The Maine State Police also has an Evidence Response Team (ERT) that examines crime scenes to identify and gather evidence involved in the criminal investigation. With a location in Orono, Maine, the agency investigates and enforces gaming and liquor licenses, and mechanic and vehicle inspection certifications. In addition, the Maine State Police operates a full-service nationally accredited crime laboratory that maintains criminal records and statistics, as well as the sex offender registry.
