Seminole Electric is an energy generation and transmission cooperative made up of 10 member systems. An estimated 1.6 million individuals and businesses in portions of 46 counties throughout Florida rely on Seminole s distribution systems for their electric power. The primary energy resource serving Seminole s member systems is Seminole Generating Station, a 1300-megawatt, coal-fueled power station located in Putnam County, south of Jacksonville, Fla. Seminole s newest resource is the Payne Creek Generating Station, a 500-megawatt plant that went into service in 2002. In addition, the co-op owns a share of Progress Energy Florida s Crystal River 3 nuclear plant, and it maintains a portfolio of purchased power agreements with other utilities, independent power producers and power marketers. Seminole Electric was incorporated in 1948.
